Olympics 2016 Rio - Equality and Diversity!
The Olympics this year in Rio de Janeiro
(Brasil) has been an exciting time for many sports fans!
There are many
reasons for why it is such an exciting time. We have the chance to see
our favourite olympians and sporting personalities win medals in the most
stylish and exciting ways, like Usain Bolt, Mo Farah, Simone Biles, Michael
Phelps, and many more, as well as seeing some rising stars like Max
Whitlock, Gary and Paul O'donovan, and Joseph Schooling beating other expected
medal winners!
It has also opened
a window to accepting more of the differences in people between countries.
Giving so many
other countries the opportunities to participate and allowing a Refugee Team to
participate as well, has shown the world a stronger meaning to the unifying
process of the Olympics. Competitors are allowed to compete the way which is
good for them, like Doaa El-Ghobashy a muslim woman from
Egypt wearing hijab and not wearing a bikini for volleyball. Cultures and
peoples are tolerated despite the varying differences.
Every participant
and competitor competes for a fair and competitive event. At the same
time the olympics exhibits some of the most fittest and healthiest people and
there are some extraordinary athletes with a huge fan base, for men and women.
Yet how far does appreciation for the human body go? Is it the same
for men and women or should it be?
The answers to
these questions are two-fold. Firstly when it comes to discrimination,
women on a general scale, suffer more abuse, so despite equality and fairness
existing for both sexes it generally is seen as dangerous to publicly ogle or
give women more attention when it comes to their looks because it could easily
be construed as disrespectful. However saying this there are many women
as well as men who have public appeal for their looks which helps with their
image and sponsors. Yet because we are a growing modern society which has
crawled out of the 'caveman days' of debasing women, media should not fall
victim to even eluding less equal standards for women when compared to men.
Nevertheless
athletes will always be appreciated for their mind-blowing physical prowess and
bodies which look like they have been "touched by the gods" as well
as their abilities to perform at the highest sporting feat!
The Rio Olympics 2016 has surely opened the window to more
equality and understanding and appreciating differences in people for Gender,
Sexuality, Culture, Race and Background. People always have their own personal
demons and obstacles to battle when it comes to Olympic performances but to see
the games in Rio treat everyone and commentate on everyone friendly and
appreciatively is a very dignifying element in the world.
